In this episode of Lead With That Ren and Allison explore the leadership lessons that we can glean from the current Writers' Strike. On May 1st, TV and Movie writers went on strike for the first time in 15 years after months long negotiations with film studios failed to create a new contract. The strike is complex issue involving power dynamics, negotiations between union representatives and production companies, and the potential long-term impact on the entertainment industry. While the writers' strike is primarily about fair treatment and compensation for workers, it also highlights, from a leadership perspective, broader concerns around workers' rights, the importance of collective bargaining, and the future of work. Join our hosts as they explore the 2023 Writers Strike: Why it’s happening, how it’s evolved, and what you might be able to learn about leadership – even if you don’t live in LA.

In this episode Ren and Allison discuss Corrine Diacre’s leadership style, in the wake of her firing earlier this month. The head coach of the French Women’s National Soccer Team, Diacre was fired just four months before the Women’s World Cup this summer. The reason? “Malfunctions [that] seem[ed], in this context, irreversible,” according to the four-person panel commissioned by the French Football Federation’s president, Philippe Diallo. He commissioned the panel to investigate claims about the culture in the team. In this episode Ren and Allison explore the different aspects of Diacre's leadership style and see what we can glean from her firing. On one hand, she was known for her strong personality and her ability to motivate her team to achieve great things. On the other hand, her authoritarian approach may have alienated some of her players and staff, and ultimately contributed to her downfall. Let’s talk about the importance of creating a culture where people can thrive, and lead with that.

Tuesday Dec 13, 2022
Tuesday Dec 13, 2022
Sometimes it's hard to find something good about leaders and leadership to talk about. And while we know recently in America there's loads to talk about from a leadership perspective, we decided to take a slightly different approach in this episode. In this season of thanks, we wanted to be very intentional about having a discussion about the importance of gratitude.
As one of our amazing colleagues, Pete Ronayne says, "Gratitude and gratitude giving is one of those key components of burning brighter in the face of all that burn out." And so in this conversation Ren and Allison focus on what they've been grateful for this year and the kind of leaders and leadership that has been out there that they felt proud of, because truthfully, there's more good out there. There's more of you doing good out there than not. So join us as we give some thanks, share some gratitude and discuss the importance of facilitating environments where we can be grateful and lead with that.

What Quiet Quitting Can Teach Us About the Importance of Communication & Development
Wednesday Nov 02, 2022
Wednesday Nov 02, 2022
Hey, can you hear that? Probably not, because that's the sound of quiet quitting.
You've likely heard of the phenomenon of quiet quitting or what some are really just calling someone doing their job description. As quiet quitting gained in popularity it highlighted what some managers have been doing for years, quiet firing. Quiet firing is when an employer does the bare legal minimum to get rid of an employee. This can often involve reducing their hours or making them do undesirable tasks until they eventually quit. And now, we've got quick quitting. Where people leave the organization within a year of joining without doing the obligatory stick it out for 2 years and don’t move too much.
Whether it's quietly doing just what your job demands of you. Or getting to a job and realizing it's not for you and leaving before the year is out, things are shifting in the American workforce. Like so many other things these days, it’s not just organizations and leadership that get to do the quick and quiet firing.
When things like this rise to the surface, we stop and take a look. What are the implications for leaders and leadership for people quietly quitting? How can we stem the tide of quick quitting, or is that even something we should do? And maybe quiet firing is one of the many tools used to make people quietly and quickly leave an organization. And as always, what is your role as a leader in this space? So in this episode, we talk quiet quitting, quick quitting, and some of the spaces in between.

What Patagonia Can Teach Us About Ethical Leadership
Wednesday Oct 05, 2022
Wednesday Oct 05, 2022
"Earth is now our only stakeholder." That was written by Yvon Chouinard on September 14th as Patagonia's billionaire founder gave away his company to Mother Earth. Instead of selling Patagonia and taking the company public, Chouinard has given the 3 billion outdoor brand to a family trust and a not-for-profit called the Holdfast Collective. The goal with the creation of these entities is to put any profit not reinvested back into Patagonia towards fighting climate change, and at its best, it'll look like something like a hundred million dollars a year donated directly to saving our planet.
Now, at a time when more and more billionaires are getting on board with "doing the right thing", at first glance, this action might not seem extraordinary. But after digging in and investigating the differences between the sale of Patagonia in this instance and the sale of so many other organizations, we see a difference here. In this episode Allison and Ren talk about an organization's role in doing the right thing, the kind of leaders it takes to do the right thing, some of the spaces in between and lead with that.

What Serena Williams Can Teach Us About Resilience & Leadership
Monday Sep 12, 2022
Monday Sep 12, 2022
On August 9th, one of the best athletes to ever grace the world of sports talked about Evolution. An Evolution away from the game of tennis and onto so many more things. Tennis superstar Serena Williams has began her farewell tour with tennis.
Serena became a professional tennis player in 1995, at the age of 14. Three years later, she won her first grand slam title at 17, at the US Open. Since then, Serena Williams has won more Grand Slam singles titles (23!) than any other man or woman in the open era. It’s easy to forget she has always won 14 grand slam doubles titles with her prolific tennis star sister along with 3 gold medals in Olympic doubles.
Not to mention she’s won nearly $100 million in prize money and has taken her tennis success into Venture Capitalism with Serena Ventures, a small VC firm with investments in MasterClass, Impossible Foods, and Noom, among many others.
With such a CV, there is so much leadership wisdom to explore. What philosophies guided her on way to success? How is she going to lead Serena Ventures? How is she going to lead the other ventures of Serena through her family and her children?
In this episode, part profile, part exploration, Allison and Ren discuss all things Serena Williams and encourage listeners to lead with that.
